RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Several studies have provided evidence about adverse pregnancy outcomes of nurses involved in occupational exposure. However, the pregnancy outcomes among nurses in middle-income countries are not well demonstrated. The main aim of this study is to present the prevalence and influencing factors of pregnancy outcomes among female nurses in China. METHODS: We included 2243 non-nurse health care workers, and 4230 nurses in this national cross-sectional study in China. Information on occupational exposures and pregnancy outcomes was collected using a face-to-face investigation. Odds ratios (ORs) were estimated through logistic regression. RESULTS: The proportion of threatened abortion, spontaneous abortion, and stillbirth of female nurses was 2.6%, 7%, and 2.1%, respectively. We found an increased risk of threatened abortion among nurses with overtime work (OR = 1.719, 95% CI 1.158-2.550). The risk of threatened abortion and spontaneous abortion was elevated among nurses handling disinfectant (OR = 2.293 and 1.63, respectively). We found a nearly twofold increased risk of premature birth (OR = 2.169, 95% CI 1.36-3.459) among nurses handling anti-cancer drugs. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggested that maternal occupational exposures might be associated with the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes among female nurses in China. We recommend that policy-markers and hospital managers work together to reduce exposure to occupational hazards and improve pregnancy outcomes among female nurses.

RESUMO

AIM: This study explored the lived experiences of racial bias for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic students undertaking an undergraduate or post-graduate degree in nursing, midwifery and allied health courses in the United Kingdom. BACKGROUND: Previous research indicates that students from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups have fewer opportunities to succeed at university and this has brought about a race awarding gap in their degree attainment. The reasons for this awarding gap are complex and multi-factorial and it is crucial that the lived experiences of racial bias are explored from the student perspective. DESIGN: A hermeneutic phenomenological approach was adopted to elicit individual and collective experiences in the practice environment, a mandatory component of the student's degree. METHODS: A focus group and individual semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data from sixteen participants and analysed using thematic analysis RESULTS: Three encompassing themes were identified which included a sense of not belonging, trauma impact on mental health and understanding covert and overt racism. Participants reported incidences of racism and appeared to be traumatised by their experiences within practice and the university. They also reported poor mental health and well-being as shared experiences and a lack of confidence in the university and practice to mitigate racial issues. CONCLUSIONS: Meaningful action must be taken by universities and practice partners to advance racial inequality initiatives by having robust anti-racism action plans and processes. These should be co-created with students and staff to reduce the race awarding gap.

Importance: Increasingly complex surgical procedures are being performed in the outpatient setting, increasing the burden on patients and caregivers to manage their postoperative symptoms. Electronic patient-reported symptom tracking may reduce this burden and help patients distinguish between expected symptoms and those requiring intervention. Objective: To determine whether electronic symptom reporting with clinical alerts for 10 days after ambulatory cancer surgery is associated with a reduction in potentially avoidable urgent care visits, defined as a visit not leading to admission. Design, Setting, and Participants: This retrospective cohort study was conducted at the Josie Robertson Surgery Center (JRSC), Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center's ambulatory surgery center with overnight stay capacity from September 20, 2016, to December 31, 2018. Patients undergoing prostatectomy, nephrectomy, mastectomy with or without immediate reconstruction, hysterectomy, or thyroidectomy at the surgery center before (n = 4195) and after (n = 2970) implementation of the Recovery Tracker (RT) electronic postoperative symptom survey were included. Data analyses were conducted from February 1 to November 24, 2020. Exposures: A short electronic survey assessing symptoms daily for 10 days after surgery, administered via the patient portal, with alerts to the clinical team and follow-up for concerning responses. Main Outcomes and Measures: The main outcome was Memorial Sloan Kettering urgent care center visits with and without readmission and any readmission within 30 days after surgery. Nursing workload was measured by patient phone calls, emails, and secure messages as documented in the electronic medical record. Results: A total of 7165 patients were analyzed, including 4195 (median age, 53 [interquartile range (IQR), 44-63] years; 3490 women [83%]) from the pre-RT implementation period and 2970 (median age, 56 [IQR, 46-65] years; 2221 women [75%]) from after full implementation. On multivariable, intent-to-treat analysis by study period, having surgery in the post-RT period was associated with a 22% decrease in the odds of an urgent care center visit without readmission (OR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.60-1.00; P = .047). Having responded to at least 1 survey was associated with a 42% reduction in the odds of an urgent care center visit without readmission (OR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.39-0.87; P = .007). There was no change in the risk of admission. Nursing calls increased by a mean of 0.86 (95% CI, 0.75-0.98) calls per patient after RT implementation (P < .001), a 34% increase. Conclusions and Relevance: In this cohort study, electronic symptom reporting with nursing follow-up for clinical alerts was associated with a reduction in potentially avoidable urgent care visits. The low risk and high benefit of this intervention suggest that these systems should be more broadly implemented.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Workplace incivility is a common problem in nursing, and novice nurses are particularly vulnerable to incivility. METHOD: Cognitive rehearsal training to defend against incivility was presented to resident nurses. RESULTS: Three months after the educational intervention, 55% of nurses reported that they had witnessed incivility in the past month and 45% reported that they had responded to the incivility when it occurred. CONCLUSION: Most of the nurses expressed that the training improved their ability to manage incivility. Responses to open-ended comments revealed that incivility adversely affects the workplace and that leaders also may benefit from education on incivility and cognitive rehearsal. RESUMO

This is a tale in three parts. It begins with an exploration of the story of Princess Tsahai, daughter of Haile Selassie, and the highly successful British campaign led by suffragette E. Sylvia Pankhurst to bring British-style nursing and medicine to Ethiopia in the 1940s and 1950s. Second, it examines the role of foreign women, most notably Swedish missionary nurses, in building health services and nursing capacity in the country. Finally, it examines the way in which nursing brought together gendered notions of expertise and geopolitical pressures to redefine expectations for Ethiopian women as citizens of the new nation-state.

RESUMO

To meet the needs of people from various cultures, nursing research must be performed on the basis of these cultures. This research aims to invent interdisciplinary research method based on Islamic documents. This method is with three stages: first, to describe a desired concept; second, to define the concept from the viewpoint of humans. Finally, a nursing discipline is achieved on the basis of the human knowledge and its findings, and Islamic documents. Results of this research method assist nurses in offering nursing care with regard to Muslim's beliefs in addition to their culture and customs.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The free-lance nurse, not bound to rigid organizational systems, can offer personalized assistance always respecting the rights of the person and of the profession. More recent graduates have decided to undertake the nursing profession by moving towards the free-lance nursing, considering it both as a career opening and as a professional opportunity, although this option never got much attention from the researchers in the Italian nursing scene. Free-lance nursing is now considered a valuable opportunity to develop a nursing career. This market is destined to grow for different reasons, such as an increasing chronicity of health conditions of more and more ageing population and the deficits of the National Health Service (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale - SSN) in community and home care. AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the correlation between the development of the free-lance nursing and the Italian socio-economic context. METHODS: The design of the study was descriptive - observational. Data collection and observation was carried out from January 2018 until April 2108. For the analysis a linear regression model was adopted to quantify a cause-effect relationship between one or more independent variables and the dependent variable which interprets the phenomenon investigated. The regression carried out was descriptive to analytically express the observed reality and represent it in a plausible way. The specification model was represented as: Free-lance nurses per capita = per capita income + Out of Pocket expense per capita + waiting lists in days + number of beds per inhabitants + NHS nurses per inhabitants. RESULTS: The estimate carried out had an R of 0.813, R-square equal to 0.6612, adjusted R-square 0.540 and standard error of the estimate 1.277, highlighting a correlation between the variables adopted in the model and a p = 0.005. From the analysis of the variables used, the average per capita income (p = 0.045) and the nurses working in the National Health Service /1,000 beds (p = 0.017) were statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: It can be stated that the free-lance nursing profession is costly for patients and therefore develops more revenue where the average per capita income grows, but the research also seems to show that, where the National Health Service has too few nurses, the private demand increases in order to satisfy healthcare needs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of Black and minority ethnic group nurse leaders and faculty in the nursing profession, even though the overall number of nurses within this demographic has increased. This study aimed to examine Black nurses' perceptions of the barriers to career advancement in nursing profession in the United States. PROCEDURE: Participants included 30 Black nurses aged 25 to 65 from health care settings across five US states recruited through purposive sampling. The study used a focused ethnographic design with semi-structured interviews to elicit responses about participants perceptions and experiences of seeking leadership and faculty positions. RESULTS: Thematic analysis revealed seven main themes: maintaining white comfort, distrust, no one like me, paving the way, worthy of representation, leadership role not expected of Black nurses, and an advanced degree does not equal advanced opportunities. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that Black nurses face significant challenges in entering leadership or faculty positions. They face racial discrimination and lack access to mentorship and support which discourages sufficiently qualified and experienced nurses from applying for high-level positions. Ensuring all nurses are afforded equal opportunity for career advancement is essential for the nursing profession's continued growth.

OBJECTIVE: As access to information grows in tandem with the growth of the Internet, access to grey literature also increases. Because little is known about the use of grey literature in nursing journals, the authors investigated the prevalence and types of grey literature citations in top nursing journals. METHODS: We analyzed all citations (n=52,116) from articles published in 2011 in 6 top nursing journals selected from the Medical Library Association's Nursing and Allied Health Resource Section's 2012 "Selected List of Nursing Journals." Grey literature citations were identified and categorized by type. RESULTS: Grey literature accounted for 10.4% of citations across all 6 journals. Publications from governments (54.3%) and corporate organizations (26.8%) were the most common types of grey literature. CONCLUSION: The substantial citation of grey literature in nursing journals shows that nursing scholars seek and use this category of information. These findings have implications for teaching and learning among nursing researchers and the information professionals who serve the nursing research community.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to assess the effects of an intervention based on the Theater of the Oppressed in reducing school bullying. METHOD: a quasi-experimental study with 232 first-year high school students from two public schools in the city of Cuiabá, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. An intervention was performed with the Theater of the Oppressed, a theatrical methodology created by Augusto Boal and inspired by Paulo Freire's "Pedagogy of the Oppressed", in which one school composed the intervention group, and another school, the comparison group. Both groups were assessed for involvement in bullying situations before and after intervention. For data analysis, Poisson Regression models with random effect were used. RESULTS: intervention group presented a significant decrease in direct victimization (physical and verbal aggression). CONCLUSION: the Theater of the Oppressed represents an important strategy in reducing bullying victimization among school adolescents.

RESUMO

This study uses YouTube content to explore trends in nursing start-ups. YouTube content can be used to understand the current trends regarding interest and awareness in various fields. The study was conducted in three stages: text mining, Delphi survey, and comparison. The frequency and degree centrality of keywords were analyzed in the text mining stage. In the Delphi survey, the 100 most frequent keywords were classified using a synthesis framework for nursing start-ups. In the comparison stage, the results of text mining and the Delphi survey were matched using a 2x2 matrix. Text mining identified "area," "business," "competence," "idea," and "success" as the most commonly used keywords. The keywords that showed the highest level of classification agreement in Delphi were "motivation," "advice," "obstacle," "business," "charisma," and "result." In the comparison using a 2x2 matrix, "dream," "idea," "opportunity," "leadership," "success," "benefit," and "satisfaction" emerged. The results indicate that interest in nursing start-ups develops at an early stage. In order to encourage nursing start-ups, it is necessary to strengthen business skills such as finance and budgeting, establish active policy support for such start-ups, and develop new nursing start-up items appropriate for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
